Insightful reflections at art exhibition

JOBURG – Parkwood-based art gallery, David Krut Projects, will host a collaborative art exhibition titled Insider/Outsider Reflections from 30 January to 27 February.

The exhibition is a presentation of artworks created by five international artists including Anne Sassoon from Israel, Moira Forjaz from Mozambique, Endale Desalegn and Aida Muluneh from Ethiopia, and Luis Alonzo-Barkigia from Mexico.

The artworks revolve around different perspectives relating to economic structures, political awareness, freedom struggles and political rallies, among others.

The exhibition also features a special focus on a selection of drawings and paintings created by Anne Sassoon, as well as photographs taken by Moira Forjaz. Despite the two artists working in different mediums, both have infused political awareness into their series of artworks.

Although Sassoon now lives abroad, she grew up in South Africa and was given ‘insider’ access to South Africa’s Freedom Struggle, thanks to her husband who was deputy editor of the anti-apartheid newspaper, The Rand Daily Mail. Her observation of the country having “its own uncomfortable visual reality” is conveyed in her paintings.

On the other side of the medium scale, Forjaz’s photographs document Mozambique during the transitional phase after gaining independence from the Portuguese in 1975. The images on display vary from intimate, domestic settings and near-derelict villages to close-ups of political figures such as Oliver Tambo and Joe Slovo. Forjaz had a close relationship with Ruth First, who was in political exile in Mozambique during this period until she was assassinated in 1982. This allowed Forjaz access to private meetings and political rallies which she recorded with her camera.

In addition to these works, the exhibition will highlight conceptual photography, monotypes on paper and collage prints.

Insider/Outsider Reflections will be on display at David Krut Projects, 142 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood.
