Joburgers light up the night for charity

JOBURG - Wanderers Stadium in Illovo was imbued with the spirit of Christmas on 2 December for Jacaranda FM and Spar's annual Carols by Candlelight.

Families came out in droves to celebrate the start of the festive season.

The event featured the musical stylings of the Soweto Gospel Choir, Lira, Elvis Blue, Matthew Mole, Loyiso Bala, Ross Learmonth and Blackbyrd, and was absolutely free.

Jacaranda and Spar asked residents to instead bring toy donations, which will in turn be donated to Heartbeat and Hanna Charities.

Pieter van Vuuren, promotions and advertising manager for Spar, said this year was the 18th year Spar had partnered with Jacaranda to host the free, festive concert.

“From the beginning we wanted to make the concert free because it reflects the spirit of the season,” he said.

GM of Jacaranda FM, Kevin Fine said he was happy with the turnout for the event this year.

“I’m super chuffed,” he gushed. “Gauteng needs more events like this.”

Fine added, “Everyone who came out tonight is prepared to give and for that reason we chose the best performance line-up we could. It’s also a chance for us to give back.”

At the event, guests brandished electric candles and relaxed on picnic blankets singing along to Christmas carols while ushering in the start of the holiday season.
