Songstress Wanda Baloyi, unplugged

MIDRAND - Songstress, Wanda Baloyi has told fans and soon-to-be fans to prepare for the time of their lives at the Lion of Africa Music Expression.

On 7 November the singer will be accompanied by her band to take the audience on a musical journey. “There will be surprise guest artists. I will be taking the audience on a journey of all four of my albums,” said Baloyi.

Although some have described her as a jazz artist, Baloyi prefers not to classify her music, “It is a fusion. I do not want to limit my music by boxing myself in.”

Young and old are invited to the music concert at Yamaha Theatre in Marlboro. “My music transcends boundaries such as age. I relate to high school children right through to people my age,” she said.

Having written songs all her life, she said her music started to sound monotonous to her. Hence, she took a bold step with her fourth album, Love and Life.

Baloyi said she challenged herself by allowing other people to write the lyrics for her. “I’ve always written my own music but this time I wanted to do something different. It is still my story but I now have had some write it from their perspective.

“I worked with musicians such as Kabomo Vilakaxi, Nothende Madumo, Roy (popularly known as RJ) Benjamin and Judith Sephuma,” she said.

Baloyi comes from a musical background and decided to make music her career when she was still in high school. “I grew up in a musical family. My father was a musician, so I was influenced a lot by him.”
