Kenny Kunene lightly roasted

The second South African Comedy Central Roast took place recently at the The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, in Johannesburg.

The night was filled with laughs, jokes, stunts, songs, anecdotes, praise, criticism and the unprintable comments about women’s parts.

Although very clear in the title, “Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene fired up by Nando’s”, no one could actually be blamed for being confused about who was actually on the hot seat on the night.

The night appeared to have belonged to Khanyi Mbau and Oscar Pistorius (in absentia) as they took a lot of the heat from roastmaster Jimmy Carr and the roast panel.

Mbau, who was fortunate enough to be given a platform to defend herself on the night, didn’t let the wrath of the roasting panel derail her as she came back throwing balls of fire.

The audience was kept entertained as all the celebrities took a bit of a bashing from each other.

However, the drop in laughter a few minutes after Carr began performing suggested that the Brit may have taken the South African jokes a little too far.

Trevor Noah, presided over the first South African Roast and the success of that night could be proof that South Africans are not too stiff to laugh about their shortfalls or even laugh at themselves, but prefer doing so if the person making the jokes is South African himself.

Roastee Kenny kept up a smiling demeanour as the panel dissected his love life, colourful past and political ambitions and saved his riposte for the end of the show, when he decimated his critics in devastating form.

Evert van der Veer, Head of Comedy Central, Africa remarked that “The Roast was a perfect example of how comedy puts everything in perspective; the inflammatory combination of controversial topics, larger-than-life personalities and comedy giants created an unforgettable evening of comedy entertainment.”
