JOBURG - We've put together a selection of weekend events, so there's no excuse to sit at home and twiddle your thumbs.

From scrabble tournaments to theatre to sports, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Saturday, 15 March:

Fourways Mall will host a celebrity scrabble tournament with rapper HHP and players from 7de Laan, Rhythm City and Muvango, to raise funds for Cotlands’ toy library, from 10am.

Just in time for St Patrick’s Day, Montecasino will host an Irish festival featuring street entertainment, Irish bands, leprechauns, pots o’gold and children’s entertainment this weekend.

An Ultimate Irish Variety Concert will take place on the piazza from 4pm. Details: www.montecasino.co.za

Browse and buy to your heart’s content at a country market at Sawasdee Exotic Nursery, corner of Zinnia and Main roads, Kyalami, from 9am until 3pm.

Hand-crafted pottery, sculptures, pewter, silver, wood and fabric items, arts and crafts, baked treats and delicious snacks will be on sale.

If sport’s your thing, check out the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium at 3.30pm.

This will be an Absa Premiership match between the two Soweto giants of local soccer.

Finding tickets may be tricky, and no public parking will be available at the stadium. Shuttles will ferry supporters from Gautrain’s Park Station to the stadium at a R50 return cost.

Pay it forward with the stars and audience of Joburg Ballet’s Coppelia at Joburg Theatre’s Mandela Theatre by knitting up a storm for those in need at 5.30pm.

67 Blankets for Madiba Day aims to sew bundles of blankets for charity.

This weekend’s your last chance to catch Pieter-Dirk Uys on stage as Bambi Kellerman, stipper, sex worker and grande horizontal, in the musical 50 Shades of Bambi at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square, Sandton. Details: www.stictlytickets.com

Sunday, 16 March:

Hyundai Rock the Run is South Africa’s first 10km and 21.1km running event that combines running with live music performances en route, and will culminate in a massive after-party at Sandton’s Mushroom Farm Park. Details: rocktherun.entriesonline.co.za

Kyalami’s Burlington Stables, at Plot 49, Trotting Close, will host a graded show for horses and riders registered to showjump at a graded level. Spectators and supporters are welcome to attend. Details: www.burlington.co.za
