Surprises and upsets at Midrand Diski Challenge second edition

The elimination of the reigning champions, Indlovu FC, in the quarterfinals stood out as a significant highlight of the event, as the defending champions were knocked out unexpectedly, leaving many fans in disbelief.

The first round and semifinals of the highly anticipated Midrand Diski Challenge, held on September 28 at Kyalami Schools, featured unexpected upsets and surprising knockouts.

A standout moment was the elimination of reigning champions Indlovu ‘Elephants’ FC in the quarterfinals, leaving fans in disbelief. Following the success of last year’s inaugural edition, where the Elephants claimed victory, this year’s tournament raised the competition’s stakes.

In the initial round, Flavour United narrowly defeated Midrand City, and Flying Fish impressed with a win over WIFA Super Stars. Indlovu advanced to the quarterfinals after overcoming Olieven Stars, while Real Midrand celebrated a hard-fought victory against ARC-Irene.

Meanwhile, Dark Angels fell to AL Baraka, and Mannenburg succumbed to Mighty Wizards. Midrand FC excelled against Stadio Waterfall, and 7 Stars triumphed over Vula Vala, contributing to a dramatic day.

Organised by the Mologadi Johannes Tuba Foundation with partners like Aquelle ViV, LogicWorld Advertising, Gazebo World, and Kyalami Schools, the event aims to enhance competitiveness and engagement each year.

Marketing officer Johnny Tuba mentioned plans to maintain a top 16 knockout format, maximising excitement with simultaneous matches across two fields.
Quarterfinal highlights included Flying Fish advancing past Flavour United, and Mighty Wizards’ surprising defeat to AL Baraka. Midrand FC’s dominant win over 7 Stars contrasted sharply with Indlovu’s shocking loss to Real Midrand.

Tuba noted that this year’s tournament winner will receive a substantial cash prize of R10 000, along with medals and trophies. He also acknowledged the logistical challenges faced during last year’s event, particularly the lack of venue support, which necessitated relocating outside of Midrand. This year, Kyalami Schools provided a suitable sporting facility.

The semifinals are scheduled for October 5, featuring AL Baraka against Midrand FC and Flying Fish facing the favorites, Real Midrand. The winners will advance to the finals, while the losing teams will compete for third place.
