Midrand Chess Foundation returns with first, rated, Individual Chess League in 8 years

Midrand Chess Foundation to host first chess tournament in eight years.

The Midrand Chess Foundation is back with an exciting extravaganza for chess aficionados of all ages.

After the resounding success of its pilot tournament post-Covid, the foundation is all set to elevate the chess experience with a rated Individual Chess League from August to November.

Participants of all ages, both local and non-local, are invited to join this grand event which will take place on Saturdays at Halfway House Primary School. Divisions will include U8, U12, U18, and over 18, depending on the number of registrations.

Kgosimang Molefe, the foundation’s coach, aims to attract more than 80 individuals to register for this league.

Participants will engage in two riveting games every Saturday, with each game spanning 60 minutes of intense strategy, nerve-wracking decisions, and tactical brilliance.

As the league unfolds, contenders will vie for the top spots in their respective categories, eyeing the coveted prizes and the prestigious trophy that awaits the champions at the finish line in November.

Molefe highlighted that the concept of this league emerged from the observation that most chess events were typically single-day affairs held at various locations, hindering consistency.

“Additionally, the venue is central to most players because there is an issue of tournaments being far. This will be a rated chess event in Midrand for almost eight years,” he said.

By encouraging locals to participate in this enriching experience, the foundation seeks to cultivate a formidable presence of chess enthusiasts in the area, fostering a culture of sportsmanship, resilience, and strategic thinking.
