The Midrand Shotokan Karate Dojo debuts at Sunfest Festival

A local dojo in Midrand took part in their first karate competition in Pretoria.

The Midrand Shotokan Karate Dojo was recently opened at Halfway House Scout Hall.

They are dedicated to providing the highest quality training, based on the fundamentals of the traditional masters to ensure all members may reach their full potential.

The dojo teaches the five basic principles of Shotokan, namely character, sincerity effort, etiquette and self-control.

Members of the dojo attended their first karate competition when they participated in a multi-sport event organised by Sunfest recently at the Colosseum Reale Roodeplaat in Pretoria.

The event commenced with a children’s competition in kata (forms) and kumite (fighting) disciplines followed by the more experienced members ranging from cadets to seniors and veterans.

The event concluded with squad training and the development of athletes.

These athletes are still fairly new to the sport and still need experience before they are put with the elite competitors.

Karate South Africa (KSA) sanctioned the karate section of the event of which it is the governing body.

TSA is the only entity that can issue National Protea colours to elite athletes who have represented South African karate at the international level.

Karate is not only a sport but a life skill that needs to be learned by every child at one point in their lives. The sport offers many benefits that may be enjoyed by practitioners at different stages of life.
