FootGolf SA partners with Disabled Youth SA for a successful Silent Open Tournament

The Silent Open Tournament was to provide an opportunity for learners with impaired hearing to showcase their skills in sports.

The FootGolf South Africa organised an 18-hole FootGolf Tournament in partnership with Disabled Youth South Africa and Gauteng School Sport for the Deaf at the Urban Life Church FootGolf course in Midrand.

The Silent Open Tournament on January 27, was specifically designed to provide an opportunity for learners with impaired hearing to showcase their skills in sports and raise awareness about the deaf community’s ability to participate in sports.

The tournament saw learners aged between 12–17 from different schools, including Sizwile School for the Deaf, S.T. Vincent School for the Deaf, Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, Filadelfia Secondary LSEN School, and MCK Special School, participate in the competition.

The event was a huge success, with other professional footgolfers showing up to support and learn Sign Language in preparation for the Silent Pro and Deaf FootGolf Championship scheduled for February 24, and September 7, where all hearing players will be required to plug their ears in support and solidarity of the deaf community.

The Silent Open Tournament was also an excellent opportunity for some learners to discover the world of footgolf, with a few already participating in last year’s inaugural Silent FootGolf Tournament.

The competition was intense, with Filadelfia and Sizwile emerging as the overall school winners after topping the charts first in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.

In the girls’ category, Lindani Zulu from Sizwile took the first position, followed by Patricia Kgowana from Filadelfia in second place. Gugulethu Dube and Sharlotte Magoboya, both from Filadelfia, tied for third position.

In the boys’ category, Empire Motloutsi from Filadelfia emerged as the winner, with Mecaylon Fynn from Sizwile in second place, and Mthembeni Hadebe from Filadelfia and Phiwokuhle Sihele from Sizwile both getting third position.
