Midrand United U10 keeper speaks about the importance of communication

Midrand United U10 keeper communicates with his defenders to keep the backline organised without being too deep and to minimise onsides.

Young soccer players must focus on honing their core skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, trapping, retaining, and shielding the ball.

Even goalkeepers, who predominantly use their hands, must develop these skills to become well-rounded shot-stoppers. Communication is also a crucial skill for the man between the sticks.

From fingertip saves to claiming crosses in a crowded box, keepers can make a significant difference to the outcome of a game.

Liam Morolong, the Midrand United FC U10 keeper, joined the club in March this year and has quickly become the team’s most established keeper.

His ability to scan the pitch, identify the best passing options, develop good timing skills and techniques to accurately distribute the ball, a sense of positioning to move with play, and excellent communication and decision-making skills have all contributed to his success.

Liam’s attitude and mental focus determine the outcome of tight games.

By communicating with his defenders, Liam keeps the backline organised without being too high and minimises the chance of a defender keeping an opponent onside by being too deep.

“My journey has been fun and competitive ever since joining the team. I enjoy the culture and the discipline here. The coaches impart great soccer drills and skills which help me in my match games,” he said.

To improve his flexibility, the 10-year-old shot-stopper trains twice a week with his team and sometimes on his own.

He understands that success as a football player requires a healthy diet, dedication, commitment, and passion for the game.

“If one wants to be a great player they must be dedicated, committed, and have a passion for football. Discipline is also important in football, like when you are injured, you must rest and recover.”

Liam’s love for soccer grew stronger after being inspired by Joe Hart, an English professional footballer who plays goalkeeper for the Scottish Premiership club Celtic.
“He was my role model when I started playing Fifa 13. He was one of Man City’s top key players. So I always wanted to become as great as him.”

The Nova Pioneer Midrand Grade 3 learner’s outstanding performance for his team has earned him praise from coaches for his growth, discipline, and super-saves that keep them going in tough matches.
