Indlovu FC shows huge character against Mamelodi Sundowns

it was important for both teams to field all their players for the preparation, so they played three halves.

Ahead of its second stint season in the Joburg men’s regional league, Indlovu FC has been up and running in their pre-season to put together a top calibre squad that will compete for the top spot in the league.

The team has earned a lot of respect from fans and other teams for their remarkable performance and brilliance in the regional league after finishing fifth with nine losses, nine draws, and 18 wins, and the players continue to impress as they proved in their recent pre-season match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

An exhibition friendly match between Thato Legodi’s boys and Sundowns took place at Groenkloof Tucks Field in Pretoria on August 12.

It was important for both teams to field all their players for the preparation, so they played three halves. In the first half, the Midrand boys were able to hold Sundowns’ first team squad, which had not been a part of The Brazilians’ MTN Eight match with Swallows, to a one-all draw, with Thapelo Moreti getting on the scoresheet.

The second half saw Sundowns (M Tigers) beat Indlovu 1–0, and the third and final half ended in a 0–0 draw.

The performance of the boys was praised by Legodi as being excellent, but he stresses that he does not have a finisher to complement their beautiful display of football with goals.

“The boys played well – obviously, the challenge was scoring against a very technical side coached by Godfrey [Sapula] and his great technical team. Indlovu displayed great character, which is something we believe is critical in the phase we are currently at,” Legodi explained.

“We are currently assessing many players, especially strikers. So we needed to focus on that position specially and we are searching for a good goalkeeper as well.”

Although some positions need to be strengthened, Indlovu’s Thato ‘Shuga’ Mabunda showed huge heart and determination in his position against Sundowns’ Keletso Makgalwa, while Sipho Sithole did likewise and raised the eyebrows of some Sundowns technical staff members with his brilliance.

Moreover, Legodi explained that participating in local tournaments has been influential for them as they managed to pick up five new players that could be added to his 2023/24 league squad.

“The goal this season is one, and only one… to be the first team to win the JHB regional league in Midrand. I think the plan is to think differently from last season. The experience we got will help us.”
