Midrand soccer girls perform on Bonza show and reach the quarters of Old Eds Girls Tournament

Different soccer challenges were assigned to the players and the Midrand crew showed exceptional talent by excelling in almost all of the trials.

Girl soccer players in Midrand have had a time of it lately.

SuperSport invited a group of them to participate in the Bonza show in honour of the Women’s Fifa World Cup on July 30.

The girls arrived at the studio delighted to be on live TV for the first time, accompanied by JR Sports Solution Academy director and coach Radia Monga and coach Dwain Dudley.

Different soccer challenges were assigned to the players and the Midrand crew showed exceptional talent by excelling in almost all of the trials.

According to Monga, the mood in the studio was lively and thrilling as players encouraged one another.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the girls. For a day, they felt like celebrities. It was incredible,” Monga remarked.

She also praised SuperSport for providing the players with this chance.

Moreover, the girls’ excitement did not end at SuperSport as on August 9 some of them represented Midrand in the Old Eds Girls Tournament hosted in Houghton.
Monga put together a team of players from various schools in Midrand and the surrounding areas for this tournament.

With coach Arthur Joshua on the sidelines, and Monga on the management side, the girls played impressively but lost in the quarterfinals.

“The team met for the first time on the day of the event – 30 minutes before their first game,” Monga said.

“It was amazing to watch how the team worked together from the first game, communicating, assisting, and supporting each other, even though some of them had met for the first time.”

In their group, they played against Sau Paulo, Nxtgen, Pink Panthers, Polokwane, Benoni 1, Benoni 2, and La Masia and they triumphed in all seven games and placed on top of their log.

They were unfortunately defeated 2–1 by Lenasia side, Sao Paulo in the quarterfinals.

“I was amazed at the sportsmanship and unity displayed by the players. Good friendships were made that day and for me, that was a win,” concluded Monga.

Details: The show aired live on Supersport Channel 205 and is available on DSTV catch-up.
