Kyalami boys display dominance to be crowned champs

On August 1, the highly anticipated finals were held at Saheti, where Christchurch and Kyalami Prep engaged in a derby.

The U13 boys’ soccer team from Kyalami Preparatory School has emerged as the champions of this year’s Gauteng region Discovery Knockout Cup.

The school and their coach are incredibly proud of the boys for their maiden victory in the tournament.

Coach and teacher at the school, Titus Tshelane, said the diligent work, dedication and teamwork displayed by the boys are commendable, and their success is a testament to their talent and determination.

“Winning the cup has brought unwavering joy and a sense of achievement to the entire Kyalami Schools Group school and community, and the boys’ achievement will be celebrated with pride for years to come,” said Tshelane.

A total of 64 schools across various age groups for both girls and boys participated in the tournament.

In the first round, Tshelane’s boys effortlessly clinched a walkover victory against Blue Hills and then proceeded to utterly embarrass Grennside with a smashing 8-3 win in the second round.

As the tournament progressed, Kyalami triumphed over Edenglen with a close 3-2 victory and then went on to put four goals past Bryneven in the quarterfinals, though the opposing team managed to score two of their own.

In the semifinals, Kyalami’s impressive performance was held to a goalless draw by Saheti but ultimately prevailed with a 3-2 win in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Tshelane highlighted some outstanding players, including Khumo Modibane, Cameron Harrisson, and Nxaba Kunene, who South Africa should keep an eye on in the years ahead for their impressive performances.

He believes that experiences on the field translate into valuable life lessons, helping to contribute to players’ overall growth and success as individuals.

“Such tournaments are crucial for building both players’ athletic skills and crucial life skills and character traits that will serve them well throughout their lives.”

Overall, Tshelane sees the boys’ victory as a foundation for further achievements and a source of inspiration for future generations of players in KSG schools and the community
