Maputha Secondary School’s U15 girls’ soccer team has been crowned champions of this year’s VW Train 4 Life soccer tournament.

Volkswagen, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, successfully concluded the VW Train 4 Life 2023 initiative in Region A on May 17.

The programme, which has supported more than 7 125 Grade 8 female learners from various schools in Region A, made its way to Rabie Ridge Stadium over the past 10 weeks.

The tournament showcased 140 girls from 10 secondary schools — JB Matabane, Ivory Secondary, David Makhubo, Umqhele, Allanridge, Ponelopele, Kaalfontein, Maphuta, Tsosoloso, and Eqinisweni.

A total of 31 matches were played, resulting in an impressive 57 goals scored and over 1 240 minutes of play. Maphuta faced Ponelopele in the finals and walked away with a 2–0 victory to bag the first-place accolades.

The initiative, which combines soccer sessions and life skill lessons, aims to unlock young women’s potential and encourage them to aspire to greatness.

It is also supported by esteemed ambassadors – former Banyana Banyana captain and decorated coach Simphiwe Dludlu and current South African national women’s soccer team coach Desiree Ellis.

Head of the Volkswagen passenger car brand Steffen Knapp said they were proud to witness the impact the initiative has had on the young girls. “Beyond just a game of soccer or a lecture, this initiative has equipped them with the tools, skills, and inspiration they need to dream big and realise their ambitions.”
