Local netball star dreams of playing for the national team

Hope Matjokotja, a stalwart player of the Okapi Netball Club, aspires to excel in netball, hoping to set a positive example for others.

There is no doubt that the 22-year-old former student of Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School plays a vital role in her team – goal defender (GD). Match after match, she keeps delivering with her impressive defensive skills.

A goal defender is only allowed in the bottom two-thirds of their court and in the goal circle.

Regardless of the position one plays, Matjokotja believes being a successful netball player requires many skills – including passing and receiving, dodging, defending, shooting, as well as footwork and movement.

“It is imperative that every player be proficient in every skill when it comes to netball. And for me, as a GD, I know positioning is crucial to my success since I need to be able to read the play and be ready for any opportunity to intercept the ball.”

Having started playing at the age of 16 as a hobby, she found that netball could also be used to fight social ills, such as drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. “The journey began for me when I realised the importance of getting a hobby and practising it to refresh my mind after a long day at school.

“What inspired me to continue on my journey was the fact that I saw potential in me as a person. As the years went by, my skills started to improve every time I stepped on the court, and ever since, my dream has always been to make my way to the national team.”

The focused and dedicated player trains from Tuesdays to Fridays for two hours.

Matjokotja added that besides netball helping you gain sports skills, it can also help you make new friends. “It can also help release any emotional baggage you are carrying, and improve your skills and self-confidence.”
