Rabie Ridge Boxing Club seeks to transform local young lives

The club’s coach hopes to expand its tournament schedule this year and expose more local children to the boxing sport.

Every day we see how sport can transform young lives, and Rabie Ridge Boxing Club strives to do the same for local youth.

Leroy Mosito, the club’s coach, described boxing as a never-ending fitness challenge ‘since no boxer has ever gloved up and mastered all aspects of the sport.’

The club was founded by Anthony McPherson and Mosito hopes to expand its tournament schedule this year and expose more local children to the sport of boxing.

Additionally, the club participated in five tournaments last year, and Shirwin van Rooyen, the team’s youngest boxer, won his three tournaments and remains undefeated.

“I hope that most of my boxers will maintain their winning records. To advance in boxing, we compete with other clubs and build up records,” said Mosito.

As an organisation registered with Ekurhuleni Boxing Association, it has played an important role in improving young people’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Five boxers from the club will be registered as ring fighters this year, meaning every fight they participate in will be recorded until they reach pro.

“Boxing is like therapy for me, and I hope that the children get something out of it as well. I really hope that our Midrand and surrounding community can one day sit down and watch one of their youth compete on bigger stages.”

Moshito concluded that their club’s biggest goal this year was to find an indoor venue as boxing outdoors meant your body had to work very hard to maintain hydration and a safe internal temperature.
