Disc Golf champ from Midrand misses win with one stroke

Newly crowned disc golf champion Mark Schroeder is pleased to achieve this win by getting the better of former champion Alex Meulenbeld.

Reigning Disc Golf South Africa champion Alex Meulenbeld from Kyalami came second in the men’s pro-open division after falling by one stroke in a nail-biting finish at the inaugural Derdepoort challenge.

Meulenbeld lost to Illovo’s Mark Schroeder who scooped the first prize money of R600 by recording an overall score of -14. Joint third place went to Lourens Vreugdenburg (Moreleta Park) and Duncan Viviers (Vereeniging). The tournament was held at Derdepoort Recreation Resort in Pretoria East on November 26.

Schroeder said, “I am super excited to have won this tournament. The key to victory was being able to avoid getting punished by the many trees and out-of-bounds on the course and going bogey-free in the second round. To achieve the win by finally getting the better of Alex was just the icing on the cake.”

Event organiser and chairperson of Disc Golf South Africa, Bart Meulenbeld said the sport was one of the world’s fastest-growing outdoor activities and was now developing all over South Africa with courses planned in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.

He said 28 players participated in four divisions of the tournament. “Once again, we had an exciting tournament, with close contests in all divisions, and the atmosphere was amazing. I particularly liked seeing all the players encourage and support each other, this is what makes disc golf unique. To improve the sport further, I would love to see a permanent disc golf course established at the Derdepoort resort and t discussions with the municipality about this had commenced,” said Meulenbeld.
