Super Rovers suffers home defeat against Opopo FC

Rovers sits in 16th place on the league log, while Opopo is cruising on position six.

Uchenna Ekeh’s only goal of the match saw Opopo FC beat Super Rovers FC 1–0 at Rabie Ridge Stadium on November 5 in the Joburg men’s regional league.

Despite winning the league last year, Opopo failed to qualify for the upper league this season after losing the playoffs, which led to their return to the regional league.

Opopo coach Thabiso Magubane said losing in the playoff finals last season was enough motivation for the team to win the league again and win the playoffs this year.

The game’s first chance fell to Opopo via a swift counter-attack that saw Ekeh feed Nelson Shey-Nko whose diving header was saved by Rovers keeper Obakeng Nchoe.

With 18 minutes gone, Rovers made some early substitutes bringing in Bokang Mohlampe and Kabelo Mogale for Anoxolo Madonsela and Khauhelo Moqechane.

The hosts had been building patient attacks of their own but with little end product, and Opopo had Ekeh to thank for his strike that left Nchoe with no chance of saving it.

Rovers were roused after halftime and Opopo keeper Sanwabo Seanego had to make a super save to keep out Randy Mackay in a one-on-one effort.

With this loss, Rovers drops to position 16 on the log with no points while Opopo moves to position six with three points.
