Every parent’s goal is to help their children stay out of trouble, do well in school and become the best version of themselves.

There is no recipe for raising a successful child but Nonduduzeko Mgaga, the mother of Mpumelelo who is in Grade 7 at Midrand Primary School, believes that encouragement and support play crucial roles in the success of a child.

At just 13 years old, Mpumelelo is a national gymnastics level-4 tumbling gold medallist, Midrand Primary School deputy head, and an actor who has appeared in numerous TV commercials for big brands.

Mpumelelo has always been confident and active, taking on whatever grabs his interest. He generally enjoys sports and was fortunate to be at a school that encourages and cultivates that.

“In everything I do, I always remind myself that there is no point in doing anything without commitment, dedication, consistency, and most importantly asking God to be with you and help you all the way until you reach your destination,” said Mpumelelo.

As much as he loves acting, gymnastics stands out most for him because he started doing it at the age of seven in Grade 2 as an extra-mural activity.

“In the previous years, I struggled to get good [gymnastics] results, especially for this level [level-4], but now that I have overcome this challenge I feel good hence gymnastics stands out for me.”
Besides his achievements at such a young age, Mpumelelo’s mother admires his perseverance, persistence and hard work.

“He works really hard and always strives to do his best. His name means ‘success’ and definitely, success will always be his portion whether big or small,” concluded Nonduduzeko.
