Christ Church learners take part in the interhouse gala

NOORDWYK — A highlight of the gala was the ladder relay, where the top swimmer from each age group came together to form one relay team.

Both preparatory and college learners at Christ Church Preparatory School and College participated in their first inter-house gala in two years since the Covid-19 pandemic.

While still under strict Covid-19 protocols, the college learners’ inter-house gala was the first to take place on January 26 followed by the prep learners’ gala on January 31. College learners participated in individual races, swimming, as well as relays, to name a few.

Each house showed spirit and supported their swimmers by roaring on the crowd as the swimmers prepared for their race. Christ Church school marketing manager Dawn Schmitz said that the school’s matric learners also participated in the fun race to mark their last inter-house gala. There was also a teachers’ race.

“Congratulations to the winning house, Olive, and to Cedar for winning the Spirit Cup. The victor ludorum was awarded to Seth van Wijk and the victrix ludorum was awarded to Nikita Joyce,” Schmitz said.

For the prep learners, the morning of their interhouse gala day started with some fun races, ensuring that all learners participated in a race. They used pool noodles and kickboards and swam the length of the pool.

A highlight of the gala was the ladder relay, where the top swimmers from each age group came together to form one relay team. The teams raced against the other houses. The ladder relay was won by Acacia.

Overall, Cedar was the winner, beating Acacia by one point. The Spirit Cup was awarded to Acacia for their continuous, high-spirited support of their house.

Two junior girls broke two records each. Ashely Hilderbrand and Alezae Willard broke the records for backstroke and breaststroke in their respective age groups.

The victrix ludorum trophy was shared between Ashley Hilderbrand and Alezae Willard, and the victor ludorum trophy was shared between Jayden Museve and Leatile Moleele.

“Well done to all the prep school pupils for their enthusiasm and to all the staff for their hard work,” Schmitz concluded.
