Kholofelo Masilela, chairperson of Waterfall City Athletics Club, a social running club which promotes a healthy lifestyle, gave tips for runners to stay safe:

  • Always run in groups during training runs, there is safety in numbers
  • Leave your cellphone and valuables at home
  • Never run with headphones on, you won’t hear cars and people approaching you
  • Headphones attract robbers who will know you have a phone or device attached to them
  • Wear bright coloured clothes, even during the day to be visible
  • Let someone know where you will be running and for how long
  • Avoid running in isolated areas and routes.
