Teams celebrate warm-up wins

MIDRAND – Midrand Cricket Club's head coach, George Mukoki said that the games were clinical victories for their first outing and did set the tone for what is expected in the season starting early October.

The Midrand Cricket Club’s (MCC) Directors and Promotion teams got their season warm-up games off to a winning start on September 18.

The Directors took on Tembisa Cricket Club in a 40-over contest.

Midrand bowled out Tembisa for 114 with a man-of-the-match five-wicket haul performance by leg-spin all-rounder Niven Govender.

According to MCC’s head coach, George Mukoki, this was Govender’s third five-wicket haul this year.

He said Midrand chased down the target easily to win by six wickets inside 20 overs.

The Promotion team took on Old Parks Cricket Club in a 40-over match. Midrand chose to bat first with Abhinav Goel and Rajesh Waran opening the batting.

“MCC lost an early wicket with Rajesh being bowled out for eight runs – 17-year-old, Keshav Lutchman joined Abhinav Goel to stabilise MCC’s innings as they put up a good second-wicket partnership without losing a wicket at the drink’s break,” he added.

Midrand lost two quick wickets after the break which brought in wicket-keeping batsman Thobani Ngqiyaza and big hitter Ona Manyisa who pushed the score to 190.

Manyisa was then joined by Mukoki and the pair shared a quickfire 50-run partnership for the sixth wicket before the latter was dismissed for 22 of 16 balls with one over to go.

“Recently called up provincial indoor player Sean January only needed five balls for his 11 not out to help Midrand Cricket Club settle on 269/6 in 40 overs,” said Mukoki.

Midrand secured the win with good bowling performances from Mukoki, Lazola Joni and quick bowling debutant Sthembiso Sibisi.
