While there is still room for improvement, Midrand Cricket Club celebrated their new development teams after the young boys and girls adopted the game with pride.

Coach George Mukoki of the club said with most of their seniors enjoying the indoor warmth of the off-season and cricket break, the momentum was gathering in junior cricket.

He added that earlier on in the year, the club’s board introduced Midrand Sports Academy, with the main aim of reviving sports in Midrand and the surrounding areas.
“With the general interest being cricket and soccer, Midrand Sports Academy has managed to introduce both sports in pre-schools, primary schools and high schools who have also welcomed the academy initiatives.

“Halfway through the year, Midrand Sports Academy has a lot going on with three junior teams consisting of U9s, U11s and U13s, actively involved in two invitational tournaments which are the Joburg Winter Cricket League and the Randburg Winter Cricket League as well,” he added.

Mukoki said with the junior teams still in a building phase, these tournaments have instilled confidence in them, boosting their ability to become quality players.

With more cricket tournaments expected this winter before the summer season starts, the race is on to get more people involved in playing, coaching and management.

“The teams have not been able to win any games thus far but there has been some decent batting stats backed up by good bowling figures from the young players. The biggest thank you has to go to the parents who week in week out avail their kids for practice sessions and most importantly games, which most of the time have had to start as early as 7.30am.
“These games wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for their love and commitment to the growth of their children.”
