Girls hit the court

IVORY PARK – Portia Nxumalo, Chairperson for Midrand PRIK Netball league explained that the tournament was an opening tournament of Midrand PRIK, she added that the netball matches were a good way to get young girls of the streets and busy playing sports.

Midrand Prik, which stands for Phomolong, Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park and Kaalfontein, held a tournament at Ivory Park’s Lord Khanyile Sports Grounds.

The tournament on 10 April hosted a number of netball teams from Region A competing against one another. The tournament welcomed back netball following the hard lockdown and was also a fundraiser.

Portia Nxumalo, chairperson for Midrand Prik netball league said the tournament was their opening tournament of the year.

She added that netball matches were a good way to get young girls off the streets and playing sport.

Sibongile Ndaba, assistant secretary for Region A Prik said, “We also want to make sure that everyone knows that netball is still alive. The only thing that kept us away from the fields was Covid-19.”

Ndaba encouraged young girls to join their local netball clubs. “We are also preparing for trials so they should come and join their local teams,” Ndaba said.

Nxumalo urged sponsors to come forward to assist the teams.

Ndaba added, “Netball doesn’t have the needed funds and we have kids who love playing netball but do not have sneakers or playing gear, some do not have transport funds to go play at all the games and even purchase food.”

Ndaba concluded, “Therefore we would love to have companies backing us up and growing these young girls into stars.”
