Women’s rugby development gets support.

MIDRAND – Mastercard's marketing director, Kirsten Wood said that supporting women rugby teams at an early stage was where the game’s future would be shaped and opportunities unlocked.

Mastercard in collaboration with the Golden Lions Rugby Union donated rugby gear to the Tshuma Stingers ladies rugby team on 25 March ahead of their rugby season.

The ladies team was gifted over 12 different types of essential rugby gear which included training kit, main post protectors, corner flags, line marker posts and flags, field marker wedges and doughnut tackle bags, rugby balls and ball bags among other items.

Kirsten Wood, marketing director at Mastercard said that by investing and developing women’s rugby at grass-roots level, Mastercard would be able to directly contribute much-needed resources where it could make a significant difference.

She added that it was important to build enthusiasm for the game from a young age. “Youth rugby has other rewarding benefits that are valuable to teenagers and the most obvious – better fitness and improved mental health. Rugby develops speed, endurance, agility, and increased confidence and better social skills.

“Investing in youth rugby on and off the field of play gives us an opportunity to positively impact their lives and their communities. This is where the game’s future is being shaped and opportunities are being unlocked.”

Excited about her team’s new resources, Esethu Maphanga expressed gratitude towards her team and the donors. Maphanga said she has been participating in rugby for three year.
She added that she would like to continue with rugby and possibly be a part of the professional girls rugby teams. “I’d like to thank the Stingers rugby team for their support.”

Tshuma Stingers club manager and head coach, Barry Nkosi thanked the Golden Lions Rugby Union for all the work put into bringing them up to that point. He added that the Midrand team has now resumed its operations following the latest Covid-19 regulation developments. “Our doors are now open with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols. We are inviting ladies to join our club ahead of the Mastercard Pirates Womens Rugby League.

“This league is taking women’s rugby development to a whole new level in the Golden Lions Rugby Union. We are excited to be part of the journey,” concluded Nkosi.
