Strong game for the MCC

MIDRAND – Coach George Mukoki said that though winless the whole tournament, Midrand Cricket Club's preparation was tested through the Covid-19T20 tournament.

Midrand Cricket Club (MCC) is excited to be playing again and is keen to prove they have what it takes to be promoted to a new league.

According to the club’s coach, George Mukoki, after the longest off-season ever, they managed to keep their players in action by hosting the T20 inter-club tournament and also the yearly held 6s tournament which was held over the first weekend of December last year.

Mukoki added that cancellation of the 2020/2021 Easterns Cricket Club season in late January was definitely what the club needed as they started playing more friendlies among themselves and local premiership side Tembisa Cricket Club at Oliphants Oval in Clayville.

He added that those games were great preparation for a Covid T20 cup tournament organised by a number of Premier League clubs to cover the remainder of the cancelled club season. “Midrand Cricket Club found itself and Tembisa Cricket Club being the only black-run clubs in Easterns Cricket participating in the Covid T20 cup tournament which was co-hosted by Bedfordview Cricket Club,” said Mukoki.

He added that from the first game of the tournament to their last qualifier game, Midrand Cricket Club exhibited a top bowling attack led by Thando Mrawu and captain Sean January which never disappointed as they bowled in good partnerships.

“The batting was a far cry from expectations as only two 50s were scored in the five games played, notably by Saleem Manuel and Thando Mrawu, but these weren’t backed up by enough match winning, batting partnerships as the runs were never enough to secure the wins,” said Mukoki. The coach however added that although they didn’t secure a win in the tournament, Midrand Cricket Club’s preparation was tested and a lot of the positives were gained.

“Club members from junior teams to the senior sides have continuously played cricket socially and competitively. This is possible through an ever-growing Midrand cricket family which has seen belief turn into reality.”
