Midrand Striders hosts Mega Miles Legends Run

MIDRAND – Seven Midrand Striders members took part in the 90km challenge.

More than 80 people ran the first-ever Mega Miles Legends Run, which was hosted by Midrand Striders.

The idea behind the virtual run was for runners to complete 90km within 12 hours sometime between 6am on 11 June and 9am on 14 June, and this could be done anywhere.

“This was a virtual run that accommodated the entire family and runners of all fitness levels,” explained the running club’s Nomathemba Masuku.

“The entry to this was free and we saw over 80 participants registering to run the 12-hour event in four days.”

She said the Comrades Marathon Association had their own virtual Race The Comrades Legends on 14 June, which meant runners in the area were spoilt for choice with the two events coinciding. “Most chose to race both of them,” Masuku continued.

“A total of seven of our members ran 90km on Sunday in our hilly Midrand which was a big challenge as it happened to be a very cold weekend in Gauteng. Johannesburg, being at a higher altitude than KwaZulu-Natal, meant running Comrades in Midrand would be more difficult but all the runners put the best foot forward and enjoyed the day out on the streets.”

She concluded that as the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown continues, the running club will continue brightening the Midrand streets in its green colours as members keep running to stay fit and lift spirits in the community.
