ICYMI: Community supports Midrand Action Sports during lockdown

MIDRAND - Community members have generously kept paying their fees despite the area being closed.

Midrand Action Sports have not had it easy during the lockdown but still they ask their loyal patrons and supporters to remain positive in these trying times.

The arena’s doors have been shut for close to two months and this has impacted the business. However, the landlord of the property has given the arena two-months’ grace and community members have paid their fees despite not being able to use the arena.

“Although we totally agree with the lockdown and believe that it was the correct decision, it has brought our business at the Midrand Action Sports to a total standstill,” said arena owner, Tommy Strydom.

He said the landlord’s decision saved the company from liquidation.”We managed to apply to each and every relief fund and even bank loans, but, to date, after two months, we have not heard anything from them. We have also continued to pay our staff their full basic salaries as we believe that we have to do anything in our power to mitigate the effect of this lockdown on them and their families.”

Strydom said their UIF claims have not been finalised, despite submitting them six times. “You do not get judged by how you act in the good times but you definitely get judged by how you act in the bad times.

“To our action sports community, we want to say that you must please remain positive even though it is extremely difficult. How we act now and adhere to the government’s rules will determine how quickly we can beat this virus and how soon we can all return to the Midrand arena.”

He added that he feels emotional whenever he considers the community of action sports players and their generosity, especially as some have paid for the full season, despite not being able to play atthe moment.

“We can never thank them enough for all their messages of support during these extremely difficult times.”He said these same members have stayed active through the lockown with all sorts of exercise challenges.

Strydom concluded, “From the Action Sports South Africa franchise side, they have started fun challenges like the oldest medal challenge where people had to post photos of the oldest medals that they won playing action sports. This specific challenge bought back many memories of the past three decades.”
