Runners keep fit during lockdown

MIDRAND – Local runners continue to stay fit during the lockdown.

The Midrand Striders have barely slowed down their pace during the nationwide lockdown, and even in the early weeks found ways to run great distances.

The running club’s Nomathemba Masuku explained, “We lost our ability to run in the streets and had to find new ways of staying fit and healthy in the midst of a life-threatening pandemic.”

Masuku lamented the cancellation of the Irene Ultra and Two Oceans Marathon, which many runners had spent months preparing for. “As Midrand Striders, we were not spared de-motivation but our leadership had to come up with home workout sessions to ensure everyone is keeping fit and to uplift their spirits.”

Club chairperson, Michelle Acton made home workouts fun through matching exercises with letters of the alphabet. Members would do the exercises matching letters that spell their names

.Masuku added, “The Easter weekend saw the Midrand Striders run their virtual home Two Oceans Marathon as a relay with teams of 14 runners. This initiative saw almost 270 runners participating, including our neighbouring sister running clubs and runners from as far as England, Vietnam, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.”

She described this as a beautiful family event with children joining in and assisting with refreshments for running adults.

With the lockdown moving to Level 4, and exercise allowed again on the streets between 6am and 9am, Midrand Striders urged the community to abide by the rules because it is only in unity that the pandemic can be beaten.
