The Riders Series hosts showjumpers for a final show for the foreseeable future

BLUE HILLS – The Riders Series is a success in what may be its last event for some time.

Showjumping fans were treated to something special at what will be one of the last events of its kind for some time: The Riders Series.

The third leg of the series played out under clear blue skies on 14 and 15 March, right before South African Showjumping and the South African Equestrian Federation postponed or cancelled all of their major events, due to the spread of the coronavirus. Blue Hills’ Ezethu has since followed suit by postponing The Riders Series.

But on the weekend there was nothing but to enjoy the event, which saw riders and their horses clear jumps between 90cm and 1.35m. A small crowd of spectators, mainly family, friends and trainers, applauded those in the arena while enjoying pumping music and a bite to eat.

The height of the jumps also made the contest a competitive one but good sportsmanship prevailed between riders as they cheered each other on between rounds.

“It went extremely well, we had a different track set out from the previous occasions and we were lucky with the weather,” said Ezethu’s Esla du Plessis.

“We will postpone the April leg but if things get better hopefully we can continue from the fifth or sixth legs of the series.”

During this difficult time, Du Plessis encouraged horse riders and stable managers to take care of the hygiene of themselves, their horses and their staff. “Also, do not give up on riding. Make sure your horses are fit and train in the meantime so when the shows start again we will be ready for it.”
