The Midrand Prik Netball League held a pre-season open tournament at the Rabie Ridge Sports Grounds on 7 March.
The tournament included teams from around Region A, some from Diepsloot, Midrand, Ivory Park and Kaalfontein.
Sibongile Ndaba, secretary for the Midrand Prik Netball League explained that the tournament was for the development of young girls around the region. “We are trying to develop young girls out of the streets and have them play netball. Today we brought the senior teams that we wanted the kids to watch so they can be inspired by them, so they can have role models and take the sport serious.
“Reason being we have seen so many kids getting pregnant, some doing drugs and therefore we are trying to avoid that as the Prik.
“This is our third year running this tournament, and we will soon have trial dates so the kids can end up in the Johannesburg Netball Association, thus also ending up in the Johannesburg squad which may be a push to the national teams in different divisions.”
At the end of the tournament, the final scores where as follows:
U13
• Ebony United 7, Mighty Girls 9
U15
• Sunrise Girls 15, Mighty Girls 11
U17
• Sunrise Girls 13, Mighty Girls 8
Seniors
• Super Rovers 14, Mighty Stars 24.

Mokgadi Mahladisa, captain for the Sunrise Girls U17 team, expressed her excitement for her team’s victory saying the tournament was good, even though they had it tough against the Mighty Girls.
“We did do our best and I am pleased as the team captain of our performance today. But I would like us to fix here and there, for instance, there were too many stepping and contacts made by both my team and the Mighty Girls netball team. We even tried to hash it out and tell them let’s play fairly so no one gets injured.”
