With many returning back to work after a busy festive season, Midrand residents flocked to Waterfall to participate in a parkrun on 11 January.
Close to 688 community members attended the Waterfall parkrun on Saturday making it the best so far – moms and dads with kids on prams, siblings, friends and even couples of all ages were up, ready and on the move to begin their health routines.
Co-event director Wayne Scholfield shared more about the parkrun and what their vision is, “Parkrun is about the community, community spirit, and doing it in a group. Parkrun is not about coming first but rather focused on getting all runners to do their best.
“One of our main aims is just trying to get people healthier, we want to get them out of bed in the morning to come to Waterfall and walk or run, which can benefit them in many ways, one of which being that if you become healthy you get less medical bills.”
Scholfield added that they encourage people to get their family and friends to join the parkrun and run, walk or even volunteer. “What is amazing with parkrun is that it is run by volunteers and nobody gives us any money whatsoever.
“As volunteers, what we do is encourage the runners to reach their milestones. If you volunteer 25 times you get a T-shirt sponsored by Mr Price and Discovery for free, you will only pay for delivery costs. After a hundred parkruns you get a black T-shirt and after 250 ones you get a green one, and that is what you wear which is called a milestone.
“Therefore, we call on all community [members] to come to join us at Waterfall every Saturday. We meet up at 7am and start at 8am until everyone is done.”
