Ebony Angels show passion has no age limit

EBONY PARK – Ebony Angels, a team for both elderly and young females is helping the community to keep fit.

Ebony Park’s women are setting the health bar high for themselves. Kgomotso Moeketsi from Ebony Park started a football club for both young and old women in her community to help herself and others stay healthy.

Moeketsi established the Ebony Angles soccer team on 13 March this year after she noticed that a lot of women have problems at home which, she said, usually results in heavy stresses that most cannot heal from. “I thought about opening the club so that when we meet up, we can exercise for our own health and heal as we relieve ourselves from our stress.

“We have our practice sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm till 5.30pm and so far we have 12 team members.”

Moeketsi added that the team is doing great and growing in numbers. “We would be happy to get sponsorship in the form of soccer kits because currently, we have been borrowing soccer gear from our friend Mike Greig of the Ian Dickie construction company’s soccer club. We would also love to have a sponsor that will be hands-on and attend our matches if possible.”

Some of the team members explained the impact the club has had on them. Representing the senior players is Elizabeth Mogashane (62) and a defender on the team. Mogashoane joined the team when it started. She said, “It helps us exercise our bodies, I no longer have body aches like before and I get time to relieve myself of stress and just spend and enjoy my time with the other ladies.

“Our performance has been great throughout since we started playing against other teams. Because we are old, we find it a bit tough sometimes when [playing on] the field.”

Zoe Simelane (33) who represents the youth team added that the team has had a positive impact on her life. “We just want to show the community that there is something we can do to empower the community.

“We face many problems in our community, one of them being drugs. I would like to ask our youth to join us and help us move forward because now we have a lot of youth in the streets doing the wrong things.”

Moeketsi said that the club is open to anyone. For more information, to join the club or to donate, contact Kgomotso Moeketsi on 079 759 0753.
