A thunee competition was hosted at Waterfall Estate to raise much-needed funds for Midrand United Football Club on 19 October.
Thunee is is a popular Indian trick-taking card game and the competition was held during the estate’s Diwali festival with 22 teams of two players each participating.
The competition was initiated by local resident and Midrand FC mother Mags Govender to raise funds for the club’s annual banquet on 30 November.
She said, “It’s a very simple operation at the club with very little funds. I thought this would be a great opportunity to raise funds.”
Founder and director of the club Morgan Moodley said, “The competition was an amazing idea. We run the football club with no set sponsor. So when Mags approached me about the tournament I thought it would help.
“I always tell the parents of the club that we are a family team. And any way to raise funds such as fun days or tournaments is perfect, also for strengthening the community that we have developed.”
The club was formed last year and has grown exponentially. It now has teams from U7 to a senior team and it operates from Halfway House Primary School.
Fundraising coordinator at the club Anita Naidoo said they were seeking sponsors to assist with their banquet and were calling on local businesses to assist in any way possible. Interested sponsors can contact Anita Naidoo on 061 634 6434.
