NOORDWYK – Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club is amped for the new season after players represented SA abroad.

Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club players are now back at training after doing South Africa proud at a major international tournament.

Out of 41 players in the South African team at the Underwater Hockey Age Group World Championships in England, 20 were past or current Christ Church members.

They helped South Africa finish fifth in the U19 women’s division, fourth in the U19 men, third in U24 women and fourth in U24 men. New Zealand won all divisions except the U24 men, which was won by Turkey.

“Some notable highlights for our club are that Kevin Langston was the national coach for SA’s U19 women, and Michael de Villiers was selected to be one of the tournament referees,” said club committee member, Lindeka Moeng.

“We’re very proud of them both. Both our U19 men and women teams were first time participants so they’ve gained a huge amount of experience playing against tough international teams.”

Furthermore, Moeng said the club was very proud of all its members who participated.

While practices are already underway, the new season for the club kicks off with an open day on 28 September, where the club will give demonstrations of the sport and welcome new players. The public is encouraged to attend.
