A number of local soccer school teams and clubs got together at Midrand High School for the second annual Ivano Seckle Soccer Tournament on 15 June.
The tournament was organised by Sharon Seckle, a local resident who lost her son Ivano in a motor vehicle accident in January last year. Seckle said, “My son studied sports management and was an excellent sportsman.
“In his final year, he did his major project by adopting an underprivileged school in the community and worked with them. He graduated posthumously in April last year.
“To honour all the good work that he has done in sports, we began this tournament.
“But it’s not only a way for us as a family to deal with our grief in a positive way but its also a way to give back to the community.
“I’ve lost my son but I can do so much for young sports people out there.”
The proceeds from the tournament go to a local school through sporting equipment.
Seckle added, “Everyone understands sports, it crosses cultures and barriers.
“The message we want to send is that one can make such a great difference through small sacrifices.”
Store manager at ASICS in Mall of Africa, where Ivano Seckle worked, Joanna Nyathi said, “We decided that knowing how involved Ivano was to sports, we wanted to support and make a difference.”
ASICS donated R10 000 to the tournament. Other sponsors at the event included Absa Midrand, Tobias Kitchen, ETA college among others.
The event hosted 11 sports teams who went head to head for the main title.
In the end, third place went to Noordwyk Secondary School, second place went to 2018 champions Midrand United Football Club while Allanridge Secondary school were crowned champions of the Ivano Seckle Soccer Tournament.
