Technique perfect at Fourways Young Horse Performance Show

TIMSRAND – Young horses test their mettle at showjumping at Fourways Riding Centre.

Young horses brought their bounce, zip and attitude to the Fourways Riding Centre for a show just for them.

The Fourways Young Horse Performance Show has been running for about 15 years and once again entertained showjumping enthusiasts on 22 and 23 June.

The event was the third show in a six-part series that takes place across Gauteng over the course of the year.

“It’s a series specifically about the production of young horses,” explained event organiser, Gail Foxcroft.

“It’s so important in our sport that we’ve always got young horses coming through. It’s for four, five, six and seven-year-old horses.

“We are looking for technique, rideability, temperament, scope – all the important things that make a good showjumper. ”

Foxcroft explained that the standard of riding is always good each year, and this year there were some very beautiful horses.

“Our breeding programmes are so much more sophisticated than they were 20 years ago. You can see it in the way the horses jump. It’s amazing to see the improvement in the quality of horses we have in this country.”

Most young horses impressed with their speed and technique in their jumping, but once all excited some of the horses had to have a few minutes to calm down before they received their winners’ ribbons.

They appeared to have the energy and desire to run and jump all day. Foxcroft said there are three shows left in the Young Horse Performance Series and she cannot wait for the sixth and final leg, which is a final, and will include the horses with the most consistent scores across the other legs.
