Grannies play football to stay fit and healthy

IVORY PARK – Grannies keep themselves healthy by forming a football team for the elderly.

Grandmothers of Ivory Park are staying fit by playing football and even formed their own team.

Ivory Park Gogos coordinator Getrude Tau said, “Many elderly women are getting sick because of not living a healthy lifestyle. This club encourages and keeps them fit and healthy.”

The team was formed in 2010 and plays in the Soweto league against other teams of elderly women. Tau would like to see the club playing abroad.

“In the coming years, we would like to see this team play in international tournaments with other grannies. Safa president Danny Jordan, told us that he is arranging a proper league for grannies in South Africa, unlike the one we have in Soweto only. We are hoping that this will happen.”

Grannies keep healthy by playing soccer at the Rabie Ridge Stadium.

Tau expressed her appreciation to the City of Johannesburg, particularly the Department of Sports and Recreation, for giving them exposure by inviting them to participate in their events.

The team was invited to play soccer against the Golden Oldies of Rabie Ridge at the Rabie Ridge Stadium on 18 May.

Tau calls on all grannies to get involved in sports activities to stay healthy. “If you are involved in sports, you won’t suffer from high blood pressure and sugar diabetes because you are always healthy.”

Ivory Park Gogos player Catherine Motloung said her love for sports made her join the club. “Playing soccer helps me to network with other grannies and we motivate each other to stay healthy.”
