VIDEO: Eaton Farm Stables hosts dog agility shows along with dressage challenge

MIDRAND – Dog and horse lovers unite for a weekend of dressage and dog agility shows.

All lovers of dogs and horses came together for a one-of-a-kind Dressage South Africa Challenge at Eaton Farm Stables.

The event from 23 to 26 May saw Gauteng’s best dressage riders battle it out for rankings that would help them decide whether to compete at the SA Dressage Championships. But for the first time, dog agility shows were incorporated in the event and excited barking could be heard along with the occasional neighing and instructions from dressage judges over the speakers.

Crowds were entertained on both fronts, especially as some dressage celebrities, including top riders and Dressage South Africa officials, were given dogs they had to complete an agility course within aid of charity.

Dressage clinics were held that incorporated experts on riding, horse diet, fitting, growing horse confidence and more.

Event co-organiser, Yolan Friedmann said many fun events were held on the dog agility course to raise money for animal welfare.

“It’s been very very good. The dogs have had fun,” she said. “They [the dogs] love running in a different environment, they are loving all the different distractions of horses and different things, so it’s been really lots of fun.”

Dressage rider Elena Jankowitz, who won the adult Prix St Georges class, said riders are fortunate that the event’s top judges travel to the different challenges held in the different provinces.

“They are able to judge the horses at all the various levels and once they are finished with the challenge we are all ranked within the country, giving us a little bit of an idea of what is to come for SA champs later on in the year,” she said.

Jankowitz described the arenas as well-prepared every day and the general organisation of the event as excellent.
