Although it was raining wickets, the women of Midrand Knights Cricket Club held on for a nail-biting win in a league match on 16 March.
The Midrand Knights, or could they be called dames in this case, came through for an 18-run win when they hosted Orange Farm Cricket Club at Midrand High School on a sunny afternoon.
The Orange Farm players had arrived late and automatically forfeited the toss to Midrand Knights, who opted to bat first.
The visiting bowlers were on point though, and had Midrand Knights in trouble early on. The regular loss of wickets meant Midrand Knights could only muster 95 runs before being bowled out in 26.2 overs.
When Midrand Knights took to the field it was all about taking wickets. Thankfully, Barbara Kriel was more than up to the task. She bagged five wickets for 33 runs in her seven overs to ensure the destruction of Orange Farm’s innings.
The visitors were bowled out for a meagre 77 runs in 15.5 overs.
“Both teams had great bowling attacks and we must credit Orange Farm for how they bowled too,” said Midrand Knights chairperson, TK Chettiar.
“It is our women’s first season in the top flight and we are going to finish fourth out of 11 teams in the Central Gauteng Lions Women’s League. This is especially impressive as it is against a lot of the established clubs who have been playing women’s cricket for years.”
Chettiar added that the club wants to start a junior women’s/girls’ team and anyone interested in joining it is welcome to contact him.
