Golden Knights hosts sports tournament

MIDRAND – Golden Knights Soccer Academy motivates youth through sports.

The Golden Knights recently held a soccer and basketball tournament to inspire the youth through sport.

The founder of Golden Knights Soccer Academy, Katleho Ntsekhe, said the soccer and basketball tournament is not only about fun but it’s a platform to unleash new talent.

Ntsekhe added that they want to change the notion in South Africa that the youth cannot build a career in sport. “I grew up playing soccer. I have made friends for life. For me this is a brotherhood.

“We are going to have a group of friends that are going to become men that will possibly be positive role models one day.

“We want to change that mindset – you do not have to be a lawyer, or be a doctor, as long as you are committed and dedicated you can follow any career.”

On 26 January, eight basketball and eight soccer teams sweat it out on the Country View Basketball Courts in Midrand.

Ntsekhe added that this is the first of 11 tournaments that will be hosted by the academy this year.

The new head of the basketball division Kofi Makofane believes that there is a shortage of skills in the sport.

“Since joining the academy in 2018, the aim is to bring the young community in Midrand to fight against drugs,” said Makofane.

“We want to bring everyone together to have fun. We thought because we love this sport so much, let’s take the passion that we have for this sport and help the community.”

One of the players on the soccer team, Anathi Mqokolo, said this tournament was a great and unique experience. “My team did not expect to play three-a-side, hence we thought we were not going to enjoy it but we were wrong. We played well, and yes, we enjoyed ourselves.”

If you missed out on the tournament, do not break into a sweat because the finals of the basketball and soccer tournament are expected to take place on 3 February.
