Club plays its way to premiership

MIDRAND – The club has 10 games ahead of them to decide their fate.

The Midrand Cricket Club has high aspirations as it battles its way to the premier league after two decades of not participating.

They are now within a whisker of reaching the pinnacle of club cricket with 10 games ahead of them which will decide their fate. Club captain and star batsman Thobani Ngqiyaza said the milestone would be a first of its kind in Midrand.

“Since Midrand last played in the premier league in the early 90s, no other local club has achieved this,” he said.

“We are proud that our club could achieve this feat again.”

The club faces some stern tests in the coming weeks with fixtures against Avion and Scaw Metal CC awaiting them. Ngqiyaza said their U10 and U12 teams which recently entered their respective leagues were starting to find their feet.

“Having started off the season with a few losses, the youngsters are beginning to show promise, lifting hopes of a first victory. Under the astute guidance of Rajesh Waran and coach Gody Zimondi, the boys are starting to look the part.”

Waran said they had a strategic partnership with Halfway House Primary and youngsters of the school were playing for the club. “This has been key in the giant strides that have been made in the children’s development. We are sure to see a few of these youngsters competing for provincial spots in the next couple of years,” he added.
