A whopping 16 000 runners are expected to take part in the SPAR Women’s Race today, keeping the roads in the area busy with a 5km fun run/walk and a 10km challenge.

The atmosphere at the 28th annual run is electric and the weather is fantastic.

If you are taking part in the race, look out for Thulethu Ngqokwe, the winner of the Face of the SPAR Women’s Race competition.

She is currently running the race along with her runners-up, Adielah Johnson, Zondelela Ramashala and Monique Naudé. They are wearing their green ‘face of the race’ shirts.

SPAR Grand Prix

Glenrose Xaba of Boxer Athletics Club leads the SPAR Grand Prix with 87 points, five more than Rudo Mhonderwa (Nedbank) in second place.

The last race in the six-race series will likely determine the winner, although certain runners may receive more points or have points deducted following an Athletics South Africa council meeting on 13 October.

This follows the disqualification of runners at the penultimate race in Pietermaritzburg after they followed the lead car instead of a lead bicycle at a certain point in the race.

Irvette van Zyl won last year’s race and aims to win again.
