Adaption and a dominating pack paid off for the Tshuma Stingers as they hammered Harlequins Rugby Club 23–0 in their Senior Grand Challenge semi-final on 4 August.
The Stingers scored two tries, converted each and kicked three penalties in the match at Midrand High School.
They might have scored three more tries if it were not for players bundling the ball forward as they went over the line.
Indeed, the one try line seemed to be cursed, and both teams marvelled at how the Stingers could not seem to dot the ball down there.
Nevertheless, the home side had the game in the bag, dominating almost every area of play while the visitors from Krugersdorp made mistakes while trying to keep possession.
The result ensures that the tournament final against Kagiso Sting Rugby Club will be a cracker.
Tshuma Stingers will host the final on 18 August.
“The semi-final was not too easy,” said winning coach, Barry Nkosi.
He explained that his gameplan to play wide balls and use the back line to overlap and find gaps was impossible to implement because of the strength of the wind on the day.
“At half-time, we changed our plan to run off the shoulder and keep recycling in the forwards.”
This worked perfectly, and Nkosi now looks forward to a chance at winning the trophy but hopes to work on winning the ball and defending better at the breakdown, beforehand.
