Tshuma Stingers move to the top of the log

MIDRAND – Tshuma Stingers triumph against both the Harlequins and Kagiso.

The Midrand and Krugersdorp giants sized each other up on 2 June at Midrand High School and the Midrand teams’ grace and dominant performance won the day.

The Stingers claimed a fourth win when they beat the Harlequins 24 – 00 and moved to the top of the log in the Senior Grand Challenge.

Prop Donald Mugandani scored the opening try of the match 11 minutes into the first half. Tshuma Stingers denied Harlequins any opportunity to score points showing great defensive skills and teamwork.

Stinger’s Rofhiwa Mundalamo spears forward as Sphamandla Madlala gives support against Harlequins.

Stingers Captain, Simbarashe Chadya put in a typically determined performance and scored a cracker in the second quarter of the match after picking the ball at the base of the scrum right in front of the Harlequins’ try line.

Lwando Yiliwe scored a late penalty into the first half to bring the Stingers to a 17 – 00 lead at the break.

Hlumelo Mello Kama from Stingers scored a superb try. Three converted tries and a penalty allowed the Stingers to hold out against a late fightback from the Harlequins.

The win keeps the Midrand team in line with their aim to defend the Golden Lions Senior Grand Challenge Cup.

Lwando Yiliwe kicked three conversions and one penalty for Stingers. The Midrand Beacon of indomitable strength continues to rank as the most effective team on defence in the Golden Lions Senior Grand Challenge.

Lwando Yiliwe makes a run for it with the ball in his hand with Kagiso Sting players hot on his heels.

Tshuma Stingers played Kagiso rugby team and earned themselves a 43 – 00 victory against Kagiso on 26 May.

“Together with the Midrand community, sponsors such as Fury Mazda Midrand, the Gauteng Department of Sports and new sponsors joined our vision of making rugby accessible to all.

We look forward to finishing strong by defending the Golden Lions Senior Grand Challenge Cup and as well as welcoming lots of young stars,” said Tshuma Stingers club chairperson, Katleho Sethabela.

Stingers’ Mnqobi Ncanana and Lwando Yiliwe dash off with the ball as Kagiso’s Johannes Modiba is left on the ground.
