Batting for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

MIDRAND – African Bank held an inter-schools cricket tournament at Winnie Mandela Primary School as part of their CSI projects.

In celebration of the life of one of South Africa’s greatest heroines, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, African Bank staff came out to support an inter-school cricket tournament held at Winnie Mandela Primary School in Tembisa.

Before the start of the tournament, the staff of various departments in the bank had the opportunity to share their memories and the impact Madikizela-Mandela had made in the country with about 350 Grade 6s and 7s.

Kennedy Dembetembe, the national CSI manager for African Bank, said in line with one of the bank’s core focus areas of supporting school sports development, it sponsors the Kwaphenduka Junior Cricket Development Programme at eight schools in Tembisa.

The cricket development programme and the inter-school cricket tournament is run by Kwaphenduka Projects, a registered non-profit organisation that has been appointed as African Bank’s sports development partner. “The project aims to encourage the physical and mental development of students in Tembisa through the beautiful game of cricket,” said Dembetembe.

The eight schools which participated in the tournament were Mikateka, Moriting, Winnie Mandela, Kanana, Kaalfontein, Thuthuka, Nyiko and Mashemong primary schools.

Dembetembe said the tournament was a great success. “This is the first of four tournaments that the children will play in and we are really looking forward to the next tournament later in the second term,” he said.

The bank donated R10 000 to the Winnie Mandela Primary School to assist in improving the schooling environment and education outcomes for the children.

“A special thanks to the bank’s Cecilia Mokoena for arranging the event, Kwaphenduka Projects, Famous Brands, Debonairs, and Coca-Cola who sponsored a meal and beverage for all Grade 6 learners.”
