Striders win the biggest bus trophy

MIDRAND – A number of 57 runners from Midrand Striders have registered for the Two Oceans marathon.

The Midrand Striders won the biggest bus trophy at the Arwyp Medical Centre’s annual race hosted by the Kempton Road Runners at Barnard Stadium on 31 January.

The 15km race is a popular run where newcomers attempt a road race for the first time.

While the Midrand Striders went away with the biggest bus trophy, the Boksburg athletic team took the honours of the fastest bus this year.

“It was probably one of the biggest buses that we have ever pulled together and we ran together from start to finish. It was a great success,” said Midrand Striders chairman Michelle Acton.

The men’s race was won by Thabang Mafa from Tembisa in a time of 49:23 and the first female was Simone Weitz from Tuks athletic club finishing at 59:40. Acton added that the

Striders would be taking part in the Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town in March this year.

She said 57 members of the club had registered to participate.

“Preparations are underway. A lot of the members are still focusing on qualifying for the ultra marathon. Most runners are concerned about the drought situation but the Two Oceans marathon organising committee has reassured running will be catered for,” she concluded.
