René Kalmer has represented South Africa at the world’s greatest running stages, but the Spar Women’s Race Joburg has, and always will be, very close to her heart.
The Olympian has run in the Spar Grand Prix Series since the age of 14 and loves how it promotes women’s road running.
She won the series three times and made the top 10 each year for the series’ first 10 years.

“The Johannesburg race has always been one of my favourites,” said Kalmer.
“There’s always a great vibe there, and I love being able to interact with all those women who turn out to take part.”
Kalmer suffered a hip injury, and the birth of her daughter, Karli, also meant she could not compete this year.

But come 8 October, Kalmer will fulfil the role as patron of the race.
“The race has moved to Marks Park Sports Club and I think the runners are going to enjoy the new route. It will be very pretty – there are so many trees in the suburbs it passes through, and with luck, the jacarandas will be in bloom.”
She added that the first 5km of the 10km challenge was flat, but there were twists and turns.

“Then there is quite a stiff climb past the Parkview Golf Club, up to the 8km mark, and some undulations to the finish. I think the race will be decided in the second half.”
The event also includes a 5km fun run, and is in aid of Reach for Recovery, a support group for women with breast cancer.
