All the prettiest horses and their riders were at the Fourways Riding Centre, now in Midrand, for the Fourways Pre-Derby Showing Show.
Bacon and egg rolls, good music and a festive vibe welcomed horse fans to the centre on a sunny 9 September. Three arenas were busy with competitions in the working riding, lead rein, first ridden pony, utility, show horse, and hack categories. These were followed by a victor ludorum show.
Young and old riders brought their best to the show to win ribbons and bragging rights, as well as valuable experience ahead of the derby starting on 26 September, and National Championships in Mpumalanga from 25 to 28 October.
“It was my first time riding in an open class and I feel so happy to win,” smiled Kelly Hall (10) on Sherwill China Blue. The young rider became the champion of the open working riding pony class.
Adult show hunter and adult working riding champion, Natalie Hogg said she worked on her warmblood’s gallop, fitness and manners ahead of the show. “Callaho Godinon didn’t put a foot wrong,” said the proud rider.
Centre owner, Marion Clough said the event was a huge success and good preparation for the upcoming shows.
“Horses grow long coats in winter so normally there is a slow start to shows in summer, but we had a very good turnout,” she said. “The highlight for me was all the little pony classes with the children – so many youngsters entered and they all looked lovely.”
