Wits ladies Modiegi Mokoka and Fortunate Bosega shining on the basketball court

JOBURG – Wits Basketball have enjoyed a stellar year on the basketball court, owed in part, to their ladies outfit which constitutes a line-up of some of the best in the business.

Due recognition is in order for the Wits basketball teams following a tremendous last few years of unrivalled achievements, not to mention this year.

Wits were crowned double University Sport South Africa (Ussa) basketball champions in July, with Wits beating University of KwaZulu-Natal 63–53 in the men’s A section final, while the women’s side ousted last year’s winners Vaal University of Technology 52–42 in the women’s A section.

Last year was an equally impressive year for the institution, as the men’s side, the Wits Horny Bucks, was crowned Ussa champions for the first time, while the Wits Lady Bucks managed Ussa, Gauteng University Basketball League and Inner City Super League finalist spots, following their 2014 Ussa success.

This success would not have transpired had it not been for the exploits of several star players. Fortunate Bosega, who featured prominently for the Lady Bucks, represented Basketball South Africa, the national senior women’s team, in Cameroon in 2015, as part of the Olympic Games and AfroBasket (FIBA Africa Championship) qualifiers. She also got the nod for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 national All Star award following a phenomenal string of performances at Ussa events.

Modiegi Mokoka is an integral part of the Wits basketball side, the Lady Bucks.

Bosega went on to represent the national Ussa ladies basketball team that won the 2016 Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (Cucsa) Games in Harare, Zimbabwe, during which time she was voted the Most Valuable Player. Bosega has subsequently been selected for this year’s national senior women’s team.

Another woman making heads turn on the basketball circuit is Modiegi Mokoka. She, like her countryman, represented the national Ussa ladies basketball team that won the 2016 Cucsa Games, prior to which she donned the national colours when South Africa contested for AfroBasket and Olympic Games qualification in Cameroon in 2015.

Modiegi is also a recipient of the national All Star award, having claimed the prized accolade on three occasions between 2015 and 2017. She has also been selected for this year’s South Africa team.

The two ladies have been exemplary for Wits in the basketball arena, and with Women’s Month coming to a conclusion, Bosega and Mokoka are shining examples of women excelling on the sports field.
